Keynote Speakers

Professor Hui Yuk is professor of philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam and professor at the City University of Hong Kong. Hui is author of several monographs that have been translated into a dozen languages, including On the Existence of Digital Objects (2016), The Question Concerning Technology in China:-An Essay in Cosmotechnics (2016), Recursivity and Contingency (2019), Art and Cosmotechnics (2021), and forthcoming Machine and Sovereignty (University of Minnesota Press, 2024).  Hui is editor of 30 Years after Les immatériaux: Art, Science and Theory (2015),  Philosophy after Automation (Philosophy Today, Vol.65. No.2, 2021), Cybernetics for the 21^st Century (2024) among others. Hui has been convenor of the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology  since 2014 and sits as a juror of the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture since 2020.

Professor Lee Ou-fan, Leo is an internationally renowned scholar whose main research areas are Chinese and Western literature and cultural studies. He has authored numerous books, with over a hundred publications to his name, including notable works such as The Romantic Generation of Modern Chinese Writers, Voices from the Iron House: A Study of Lu Xun and Shanghai Modern: The Emergence of a New Urban Culture in China 1930-1945.

Born in Henan and raised in Taiwan, Professor Lee graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University in 1961 and obtained a Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University in 1970. He has taught at various international institutions, including The Chinese University of Hong Kong (1970-1972, 2004-2019), Princeton University (1972-1976), Indiana University (1976-1982), The University of Chicago (1982-1990), UCLA (1990-1994), and Harvard University (1994-2004).

In 2022, Prof. Lee was offered an invitation by Prof. Chan Sin Wai, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Languages, to serve as an honorary professor at CIHE. 

Professor Gualtiero Piccinini is Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Associate Director of the Center for Neurodynamics at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. In 2014, he received the Herbert A. Simon Award from the International Association for Computing and Philosophy. In 2018, he received the K. Jon Barwise Prize from the American Philosophical Association. In 2019, he received the Chancellor’s Award for Research and Creativity from University of Missouri – St. Louis. His publications include Physical Computation: A Mechanistic Account (Oxford University Press, 2015), Neurocognitive Mechanisms: Explaining Biological Cognition (Oxford University Press, 2020), and The Physical Signature of Computation: A Robust Mapping Account (with Neal G. Anderson, Oxford University Press, forthcoming).

Professor Lampo Leong received his PhD from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, MFA, California College of the Arts, is currently a Distinguished Professor, Doctoral Advisor, and Director of Center for Arts and Design at the University of Macau. Leong is also a Tenured Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia in the USA and Visiting Professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Leong has served as curator and judge for over 60 art exhibitions and competitions and presented more than 260 lectures across the US and Asia in institutions such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and China Academy of Art. Leong’s work has been featured in Christie’s, and in art expos, museums, and galleries worldwide through more than 70 solo and over 415 juried and curated national and international group exhibitions and has received over 100 awards. Leong’s works can be found in more than ten museums, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, as well as public art commissions for Columbia City Hall, and an 8-meter-diameter granite inset calligraphic medallion for a San Francisco city park. Leong’s achievements have been documented in over 1000 reviews and publications in magazines, art books, and on TV internationally, including the front cover of the New Art International in New York, Art Frontier in California, and the Creative Genius: 100 Contemporary Artists in London.

Professor Eric Friginal is Professor and Head of Department of English and Communication at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also the director of PolyU’s Research Center in Professional Communication in English (RCPCE). Before moving to Hong Kong, he was Professor and Director of International Programs at the Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL, College of Arts and Sciences at Georgia State University. He specializes in applied corpus linguistics, quantitative research, language policy and planning, technology and language teaching, sociolinguistics, cross-cultural communication, discipline-specific writing, and the analysis of spoken professional discourse in the workplace. His recent publications include The Routledge Handbook of Corpus Approaches to Discourse Analysis (2021), co-edited with Jack Hardy; English in Global Aviation: Context, Research, and Pedagogy, with Elizabeth Mathews and Jennifer Roberts (2020); and Corpus Linguistics for English Teachers: New Tools, Online Resources, and Classroom Activities (2018). He is the founding co- editor-in-chief of Applied Corpus Linguistics (ACORP) Journal (with Paul Thompson).

Professor Gloria Corpas Pastor obtained her BA in German Philology (English) from the University of Malaga. PhD in English Philology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1994). Visiting Professor in Translation Technology at the Research Institute in Information and Language Processing (RIILP) of the University of Wolverhampton, UK (2007-2023), honorary Adjunct Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China (since 2020), and Professor in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Malaga, Spain (since 2008). Published and cited extensively, member of several international and national editorial and scientific committees. Spanish delegate for AEN/CTN 174 and CEN/BTTF 138, Spanish expert for TC37/SC5, where she has been convenor of ISO TC37/SC5AHG2 “Speech to Text” (2019-2023). Extensive experience in institutional evaluation programmes, including verification, monitoring and accreditation (ANECA, AQU, ACCUEE, DEVA, AQU, etc.). President of the Evaluation and Verification Commission (Arts and Humanities) at Fundación para el Conocimiento Madri+d, and President of the Evaluation Committee (the Arts and Humanities) at ACCUEE. She also collaborates regularly as evaluator for the Spanish Ministry in various R&D and youth employment programmes. She has recently been awarded the “2017 Farola Award” in the field of New Technologies, given by the Andalusian Women’s Institute, Junta de Andalucía; the Certificate of Commendation-Saint Francis Prize in Techno-Humanities 2022, given by the Caritas Institute of Higher Education, Hong Kong; the “Doctora de Alcalá Award” for her excellent track-record in Arts and the Humanities (2022), given by the University of Alcala; and “Flag of Andalucia Award” on Research, Science and Healthcare (2023), granted by the Andalusian Government. First Prize in the Spin-Off competition (XXVII Edition, 2023).President of AIETI (Iberian Association of Translation and Interpreting Studies, 2015-2017), Vice-President of AMIT-A (Association of Women in Science and Technology of Andalusia, 2014-2017), and Director of the Department of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Malaga (2016-2021). She is currently director of the Research Institute in Multilingual Language Technologies (IUITLM).
